POTHOLES
Winnipeg Design Festival #STREET_PLAY
Constructed 2019
Group: Scott Mandziuk

What do you think of when you think of Winnipeg? To us, Winnipeg is a lot of things. It's a collection of neighborhoods with their own unique identities, architectural stylings, amenities, and reputations. It's a community full of budget-conscious people, people who like to have fun, and a people unified by the necessity of avoiding failing infrastructure. From these ideas, Potholes was born!
One warm summer night in a dark alleyway during the Winnipeg Design Festival, a large-scale labyrinth was built and dropped on site. Consisting of Winnipeg landmarks such as the famous Transcona flamingos and the emblematic deer of Charleswood, Potholes was an abstract and interactive miniature model of the city designed to provide a cooperative challenge to festival-goers: navigate to the downtown!
To make matters more challenging, walls reminiscent of construction barricades and holes are placed throughout to increase difficulty. The many thrifted emblems of Winnipeg Neighborhoods provide wayfinding for two or more people to work together and tilt the board to reach their destination, providing they aren't claimed by a Pothole!
