[RE]FUEL

[PARK]ing Day Winnipeg

Summer 2016

Individual Project

[RE]FUEL is a candid exposition of an age-old and ongoing conflict between the practices of man and its impact on nature.

As a very direct metaphor for the resiliency of life over our destructive practices, [RE]FUEL challenges us not to become complacent in humanity’s role in combating negative environmental change. It is an installation designed to be inspirational, immediately understood, and powerful.

The juxtaposition of harsh rust and lush, multi-coloured plants highlights their disparate materialities and the necessity of both of these elements to coexist in the future.

Small potted seeds were given away from the doorway to provide fuel to passersby. The entirety of the project was assembled the morning of the Parking Day event and disassembled immediately afterward, acting as a bookend installation.

The budget for the project was originally five hundred dollars, but through gracious donations of the car, towing, and plants, the project cost nothing save for its signage.

[RE]FUEL shows to us that in spite of all of the damage and ruin we have brought to the earth, life can still overgrow and continue to flourish. Nature will prevail, we just need to do our part to help facilitate it. We simply need to provide fuel.
