THROWING SHADE

COOL GARDENS 2018

Summer 2018

Group Member: Scott Mandziuk

Throwing Shade is a visually dynamic and interactive art installation designed to make the most of an underutilized public space.

In our study of the site we noticed there was a lack of tree cover and gathering spaces in the surrounding area. We resolved to create a shaded space for professionals and pedestrians alike to relax. With the site’s close proximity to the Jardin de Sculptures, the Provencher Farmer’s market and several local restaurants, is a large amount of pedestrian traffic.

We want to create an inviting space for these pedestrians with meaningfully placed seating and planters that encourage social interaction and frames the view of the surrounding gardens. The shades of blue throughout the site provide calmness and stability. The blue sails above mirror the sky and create intriguing forms.

Triangular, weather resistant fabric will
be hung at varying heights and angles to
form a dynamic and flowing canopy over
the site. These ‘shade sails’ throw shade
onto the planters and benches below.

The benches are constructed of treated lumber and can seat up to 3 people on each side. The benches are orientated towards the Sculpture Garden to direct focus to its quality. Wooden planter boxes house the concrete footing and 4”aluminum tubing to which the sails are attached. The remainder of the space is allocated to shade tolerant plants such as hostas and astible.
