SOWN TOGETHER
Picnic In an Eviscerated Landscape
U of M Fall Term 2017
Group: Christopher Theide

The farming plots, ferns, and forest contrast and are in constant friction depending on the amount of use the farms get. Markets and Sport courts encourage community between inmates and residents.

The over-arching goal of this project was to create a productive space for both the residents of Stony Mountain and the minimum security prisoners of the Stony Mountain penitentiary to interact, learn, and grow as a community. The design intention for the inmates was to create an educational space where they can learn how to grow crops that flourish in the Manitoba Landscape in a tactile way.
The inmates would be involved in every step of the process, from the construction of the farming plots and various design elements to the harvesting of food and goods for sale to the community. The food could also go to the penitentiary to help offset costs. For the town residents, Sown together is intended to provide space to grow their own crops and recreational and commercial facilities.
Having these two unique communities share a space to produce food encourages not only the reduction of stigma towards inmates, but an opportunity for inmates to learn valuable life and social skills through farming, construction, and team-building. Sown Together aims to create new life and use in the eviscerated landscape of the Stony Mountain Quarry.
